The Zimbabwe government has increased the retirement age for its public service and uniformed forces.
In Statutory Instruments gazetted, the new setup says:
- Previously, a person would be required to retire from the civil service at 65. Now, they can retire at 70
- Retirement age for regular soldiers is now 55, up from 50. A member can extend up to 60 years, and 65 if they’re a war vet
- Retirement age for ZDF commissioned officers is now 65. They have an option to stay up to 70 years of age
- The period of service for ZRP, Prisons and Health Services has also been increased to 70.
The last one is of interest to some commentators as unofficial government communication has said that outgoing ZRP Commissioner General Godwin Matanga was recently retired because he was reaching the mandatory age. The incoming police boss is Shepherd Mutamba who is only slightly younger than him.
With the new designation now 70 years for retirement, it means he can serve out his term.
That said, if this new regulation had come a month ago, it would have allowd Matanga to carry on.
A clause says:
(8) Apermanent service officer appointed before the effective date on pensionable terms of service shall have a pensionable age of sixty-five years unless the member elects to retire at seventy years of age and any retirement before the elected pensionable age of seventy shall be deemed to be early retirement.” ,
A case of Ps and Qs then?
