Captain Virgil van Dijk says his Liverpool team-mates understand the rivalry with Manchester United and that the match against the Red Devils at Anfield will have “a bit of extra meaning for our supporters”. ” he admitted.
Liverpool are currently enjoying an impressive run in Arne Slott’s first season in charge. Slott’s side sit top of the Premier League and have a chance to go eight points clear when they host United on Sunday.
In contrast, their strong rivals have continued to struggle this term under new manager Ruben Amorim. Despite the win against Manchester City, United have lost their last three league games without scoring and conceding seven goals.
United currently sit 14th in the table and Amorim recently admitted his side were fighting to avoid relegation.

However, the Dutchman said in his official matchday program notes that he expected a tough test at Anfield and knew this game was even more important.
“When you play for this club, every match is important,” Van Dijk wrote. “But of course the game against United at Anfield has a special meaning for our supporters.
“We understand this rivalry and we know there will be a special atmosphere and we want to use that to our advantage as we aim for the three points.
“Don’t get me wrong, this is going to be a tough test. We know United are not where we want to be in the league and have had a difficult start to the season, but we still have top-class players. It’s important to focus and work from the beginning.”
The Reds captain also reflected on their strong first half of the season, but insisted there was still work to do.
“We know what success is built on: quality, of course, but also humility, sacrifice, work ethic, and togetherness. If we keep that in the back of our minds, They will take us where we want to go.
“The foundation we have given ourselves in the first few months of the season is clear, but now we have to move on from here.
“We don’t look at the league table or count the points we haven’t earned yet. We are just focused on the next game, the next challenge. It’s important.”
