Days after the Indian bloc was defeated in assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said he did not want electronic voting machines (EVMs) and demanded reinstatement of ballot papers.
“We don’t want EVMs, we want ballot papers,” PTI reported quoting Malikarjun Karge.
Kharge called for a campaign similar to the Bharat Pure Land Yatra demanding return of ballot papers and abolition of EVMs.
Kharji made the remark while addressing a Sanvidhan Rakshak Abhiyan event at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi.
The recent Maharashtra assembly elections were a one-sided affair, with Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) losing to the BJP-led Mahayuti. The MVA coalition won 46 seats, while the Congress won only 16 seats.
Mr. Mahayuti won 230 out of 288 seats, recording a landslide victory. The BJP won 132 seats, the Shiv Sena 57 and the NCP 41.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have written to the Speakers of both Houses, requesting them to hold a two-day debate on the Constitution.
“We should take time to discuss the good things about the Constitution and also discuss the wrong things that are happening today. Rahul Gandhi and I have written a letter and are waiting for the government’s response. ” Kharge told PTI.
What did Karji say?
The Congress leader claimed that Prime Minister Modi is afraid of the caste census, adding, “Everyone is demanding their share.”
Kharge also told the Bharatiya Janata Party that if it really wants unity in the country, it should stop spreading hatred.
