The band members showcased the song after losing their studio and one of their homes in the ongoing fires
After personally experiencing significant loss in the Southern California fires, Dawes appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to pay tribute to their city with a special performance of “Time Spent in Los Angeles.”
Taylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith took the late-night stage for an intimate showcase of the 2011 song, off the band’s album Nothing Is Wrong. As the duo performed, footage of Los Angeles before and after the destructive fires played on the screen behind them. The performance was part of Jimmy Kimmel’s fundraiser for MusiCares, which supports musicians with financial hardships.
Last week, Taylor’s wife Mandy Moore revealed that much of their Altadena house and Goldsmith’s home recording studio were destroyed in the fires. “Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now. It’s not livable but mostly intact,” she wrote on social media. “We lost Taylor and griffin’s studio with every instrument and piece of equipment they’ve ever owned. We lost our garage and back house.”
Moore later shared that Griffin and his pregnant wife, who lived within the same neighborhood, also lost their home in the fire. “With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever,” she said. “Griff is a touring musician and also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion he uses to make a living.” She also shared a GoFundMe to assist Griffin’s family.
Taylor recounted his experience with the fires in an emotional story for Rolling Stone. “There are parts of Altadena where it’s just blocks and blocks of everything gone,” he shared. “It looks like a nuclear bomb went off. Driving through it, there are wooden telephone poles on fire that are teetering, and you’re like, ‘Should I speed up or slow down to not get hit by this flaming telephone pole?’”
After canceling his shows last week in the wake of the fires, Kimmel brought Jimmy Kimmel Live back this week as a fundraiser. He has also opened the show’s Hollywood backlot as a donation center to collect essential resources for those impacted by the fires. On last night’s episode, Kimmel was joined by Snoop Dogg and Roy Wood Jr. alongside Dawes to share their love for Los Angeles.
