Some local media interpreted the phrase as suggesting the president was planning to run for office again, after the head of state had said he planned to hand over leadership to a new generation in spring 2023. .
Meanwhile, according to the law, Erdogan would need either a constitutional amendment or early elections to renominate him. Some lawyers agree that under these options there would be no impediment to his renomination.
The ruling Justice and Development Party has so far ruled out the possibility of early elections. However, they intend to draft a new constitution and put it to a referendum. Work is still in progress, but no firm deadline has been set.
Mr. Erdoğan was first elected president in 2014, when a parliamentary system of government was in place. He was re-elected in 2018 under the presidential system. He ran again in 2023 after the previous constitutional provisions were invalidated by the transition to a different system.
