The 2025 awards season officially kicked off last night at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton in LA. The Golden Globes mark the first big red carpet moment each year, and themselves set a precedent for other ceremonies. This also applies to costumes. Any celebrity stylist knows how important it is to create a solid first awards season look at the Golden Globes. This will establish your client as someone to keep an eye on for the entire duration. Most of us agree that it will end with the Oscars in late February. or early March (as you know, this year’s ceremony will be held on March 3, 2025).

My colleagues in the US have already done the hard work compiling the best looks of the night, and now, hours after the event, it’s my job to start analyzing the small trends that were having an impact. And it didn’t take long to see certain shoe trends keep popping up. But what surprised me is that this is a shoe that the aforementioned celebrity stylists often try to avoid.

I don’t have anything against court shoes with pointy toes, but I own several pairs myself. But they’re generally not considered the most exciting shoe option, especially for big award moments. As a fashion editor, I can’t tell you how many stylists flatly refuse to make their clients wear court shoes when on the red carpet, defaulting to metallic sandals that look more formal and eliminate the risk of the shoes looking ungainly. I also know. Pair it with a beautiful gown. Some may think it’s a little outdated. Over the years, we’ve seen many other heeled shoes get attention, from platform Mary Janes to ’50s-inspired mules, but not as much on the court. But it seems they are more than just things. Court shoes have emerged as this season’s biggest shoe trend, with many of the Golden Globes’ high-paying guests and stylists opting for court shoes.

What I also found interesting was the preference for matching the dress itself. Zendaya’s dress is cut from the same rusted satin fabric as her stunning Louis Vuitton dress, and Ariana Grande’s Stuart Weitzman pair pairs perfectly with her delicate butter yellow Givenchy shift Ta. The ever-elegant Angelina Jolie chose metallic court shoes to complement her silver-beaded Alexander McQueen dress. While Kerry Washington’s Balenciaga wasn’t as hot pink as her Balenciaga gown, the fact that she opted for a classic black coat and dramatic black opera gloves to pull her look together was a no-brainer. It’s a gift of genius.
