Wake up to a heavy blanket of snow stretched over miles of gorgeous mountain scenery, spend the day cruising round the slopes under an endless blue sky, and ease into the evening next to a crackling log fire, hot chocolate (or something stronger) in hand, before heading to a candlelit dinner in a cosy mountain hut.
How does that sound as far as romantic ski weekends go?
Now that Christmas has passed, and we’re well on our way to Valentine’s day, why not break away from the cliché of white sand beach retreats or bustling city breaks, and head to the Alps for a romantic ski break that is bound to impress your other half?
To help you on your way, here’s a list we’ve put together of the most romantic spots in the Alps…
Alpbach, Austria
Couples will love a weekend away to this rustic town, rich in its authentic Tirolean atmosphere. It’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing destinations in Austria, with its stone and wooden architecture. It could be straight out of a film set (or a snowglobe), with its totally unspoilt look and warm, traditional feel; the absence of tacky chains and purpose-built blocks of flats for holiday-makers is certainly appreciated here. We love the pretty Tirolean houses, and the beautiful church that is lit up at night is a special sight. There are plenty of cosy mountain huts with delicious cuisine that is also kind to the wallet, and there’s a general relaxed and calm vibe here. Locals are welcoming and friendly, and few places could compete with this place for the Alps’ most romantic resort.
Kitzbühel, Austria
Enjoy a ski weekend in Kitzbühel which is another great spot for lovers, with its pedestrian town centre, complete with cobblestones and hand-painted houses. It’s a beautiful, medieval town and home to plenty of luxury, boutique hotels. Similarly to Alpbach, its Austrian authenticity draws you in, and it’s renowned for its Alpine beauty, tranquillity, and elegant Tirolean styling. There’s also a large ski area here, that is varied, attractive, and brilliantly interlinked with the huge SkiWelt region. Treat yourself to a stay at Hotel Zur Tenne – opt for a room with a fireplace and canopy bed and warm up together after a day of fresh powder. Breakfast in the winter garden is another nice romantic touch.
St Christoph, Austria
This is another idyllic mountain village that glows with rustic beauty and Alpine elegance. It’s quiet, and you won’t find truckloads of Brits here (unlike neighbouring St. Anton). The ski area is extensive – it’s connected to the aforementioned St. Anton, as well as Lech and Zurs – so there’s plenty of terrain for you and your partner to explore together. After a day on the slopes, you can take your pick from luxury hotels to return to. Our top choice is the Arlberg Hospiz hotel – the perfect combination of elegance and cosiness with roaring fires, a lovely spa and attentive staff.
Zermatt, Switzerland
Hit the slopes for a ski weekend in Zermatt. Here, the old farm buildings and chalets with a backdrop of the amazing Matterhorn (think Toblerone), probably make it the prettiest resort in Switzerland. The views are absolutely incredible, and the skiing here is phenomenal, which is a handy bonus. The whole town is car-free, which creates a real oasis of tranquillity – deep sleeps are guaranteed here, and the clean air will help reset your mind and body. For the best view in town, we recommend the Schönegg, or for an equally magical experience of the home of the majestic Matterhorn, try the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort.
Megeve, France
Here’s another lovely medieval village, this time in France, complete with snowy cobbled streets and horse-drawn carriages. The ski area in Megeve is fantastic, and there’s a plethora of designer chalets for you and your other half to cosy up in, in the evening. Here, you’ll also find some of the best and most romantic hotels in the Alps. If you’re looking for a real treat for you and your partner, try the Fermes de Marie. It’s a rustic-chic hotel with a hugely romantic ambience and one of the best spas we’ve been to. We reckon there’s nothing that reignites the flame more than a couples spa treatment – ignite your senses and indulge in some lavish self-care as you unwind together and let the tension of everyday life slip away.
Courmayeur, Italy
Let’s just say, Italy has its reputation as the land of love with good reason. But instead of the selfie-stick saturated streets of Venice, why not opt for the much more subtle choice of a ski resort such as Courmayeur. We think Italy’s romantic essence is captured even more beautifully in a quiet, snowy scene than in the tourist-inundated Italian cities that dominate the Instagram tag #RomanticBreak. As you’d expect of Italy, this town is oozing with sophistication and is effortlessly stylish and chic. If a love for amazing food is at the heart of your relationship, this is the place for you. Again, you have plenty of options of high-end places to stay, but a favourite of ours is Auberge de la Maison – this is a gorgeous wood and stone hotel with a fantastic spa and astonishing views.
San Cassiano, Italy
Nestled in the Dolomites in the Alta Badia area (it might not be in the Alps but we felt it deserved a mention regardless!), this cute little village is the home of what many consider to be the ultimate romantic hotel, the Rosa Alpina. This is an incredibly dreamy spot – the hotel is a humble but glamorous haven, complete with a three Michelin-starred restaurant. Here, couples can dive deep into relaxation, indulgence, and peace. This is a good choice for those wanting a quiet escape, residing in a bubble far away from the real world, to really relish each other’s company amidst snowy surroundings. The pink-tinged mountains at sunset here are particularly beautiful.
You Deserve It
So, how about it? Whether you’ve got an anniversary approaching, feel like a Valentine’s day surprise, or perhaps your Christmas present didn’t quite cut it this year, a ski holiday to the Alps is what we call a romantic gesture. Oh, and be sure to avoid half term week in February, as gaggles of ski school kids could somewhat detract from the romance.
