Snow warning for London as UK braces for temperatures to plummet to -20C

A weather warning for snow has been issued for London as the UK is set to see temperatures plunge to as low as -20C this week.

The Met Office has said up to two inches of snow could fall in the south of England on Wednesday, including the capital.

Weather warnings for snow and ice are also in place in Northern Ireland and western and northern Scotland until noon on Wednesday.

The cold snap is set to continue until the end of this week, with amber health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency in place across England until midday on Sunday.

The bad weather has continued to cause travel chaos on Tuesday, with Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Aberdeen Airport both closed in the morning due to the snow.

And there are still hundreds of flood alerts and warnings across the country thanks to rain and melting snow. As of Tuesday lunchtime, the Environment Agency had one danger-to-life flood warning, 133 flood warnings and 217 flood alerts in place across England.

A 25-year-old woman visiting her mother’s home in Belton Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, for Christmas said she did not expect to become “trapped” after the house was flooded on Tuesday.

Duaa Abdulal remains stuck with her mother and younger sister upstairs while the ground floor of the home is filled with water.

She said the house was destroyed by flooding from Storm Henk in January last year and the family have not finished refurbishing since then.

Ms Abdulal said: “We’re stuck upstairs. Last year my family managed to leave the building.

“Thankfully, today we managed to get everything upstairs when we got the flood warning.

“We’re still recovering from last year, actually, we haven’t finished refurbishing the house, so it’s stressful.”

A man, who did not wish to be named, found his home flooded on Tuesday in Belton Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, from rising water in the nearby Grand Union Canal.

He said he has been living in alternative accommodation for a year since Storm Henk damaged his property last January and was just about to move back in before the flooding started again on Monday.

The homeowner told the PA News Agency, as he stood on the road near his house: “They had almost got everything ready to move back in – all new downstairs. Now, all the new stuff, the new items, have got to be repaired and replaced again.

“They will potentially tell us it’s all got to be scrapped.

“Last year everything downstairs – the carpets, flooring, furniture – all were damaged.

“In the space of a year, it’s just unbelievable that it’s happened again.

“I can’t comprehend this all, you never think it’s going to happen in this area.

“It’s the Grand Union canal – it seems like there’s a weak point that just sort of overflows and just all comes cascading down this way.”

RAC say Monday was the busiest day for breakdowns this winter

Rod Dennis, RAC spokesperson, said: “Monday was our busiest day for breakdowns this winter so far, with our teams taking more calls from members than at any other point in the last 12 months. With cold conditions persisting, we expect today to be almost as busy with our patrols working incredibly hard to rescue our members and get people moving.

“Anyone unfortunate enough to break down should expect a longer wait than normal this week. It’s therefore more important than ever that drivers ensure they have an emergency breakdown kit in the boot – extra warm clothes including waterproofs, sturdy shoes, some food and drink and a fully charged power bank to keep a mobile phone charged up.

“With hundreds of flood warnings still in force, especially across central and southern parts of the UK, drivers need to remain vigilant. They should never drive through standing water unless they can be totally sure all of it is shallow, which can be impossible on roads that aren’t perfectly flat.

“If in any doubt about the water’s depth, turn around and find another safer route. We also urge everyone to obey road closures which are in place to keep them away from floodwater.”

People in Ireland warned of ‘invisible hazards’ amid Orange-level low temperature alerts

People in Ireland are being urged to keep their guard up ahead of a Status Orange low temperature warning issued for most counties on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Snow and sub-zero conditions have already caused hazardous driving conditions and cut power and water to thousands of homes, with crews from various agencies working to help stranded communities.

The worst-hit counties are Tipperary, Limerick, Cork and Kerry, where authorities have deployed additional supports to clear snow before sub-zero temperatures hit again.

An Orange alert is in place for most counties from 8pm on Tuesday until 10am on Wednesday, with severe frost, ice and snow forecast.

Another Orange low temperature warning is in place from 6pm on Wednesday until 11am on Thursday for 25 counties.

Separately, a Status Yellow low temperature warning remains in place for all counties until 6am on Friday.

Irish premier Simon Harris warned people to be aware of the “invisible hazards” as temperatures fall to as low as minus eight degrees overnight.

Judi Beresford, Leicestershire’s assistant chief fire and rescue officer, said the demand on the service from flooding across the county has been “challenging”.

She said: “The pressure that we experienced yesterday from about five o’clock in the morning and well into the early hours of this morning was significant.

“It was very challenging but I’m really pleased to say that our crews handled themselves and the situation magnificently.

“The latest information that we have is that the water is still continuing to rise, particularly in relation to the rivers, but we would expect that to start to ease.

“Just because the weather is showing some signs of improvement at the moment, floodwater can still be incredibly dangerous, so I’d still just reinforce our messages to stay out of floodwater, to plan journeys ahead, and if people do need assistance and life is at risk, then please dial 999.”

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has responded to 380 calls and attended 56 flooding incidents since Monday morning.

Potential for more snow in the south on Wednesday

There is the potential for another frontal system to move in from the southwest on Wednesday, bringing further snow and ice. A Yellow Warning is currently in place to cover this.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mike Silverstone, explained: “There is a chance of a further spell of rain, sleet and snow moving in from the southwest on Wednesday to affect some southern parts of the UK.”

“Whilst not all those in the warning area may be affected, it is possible that that 2-5 cm of snow may accumulate fairly widely. Whether this system will brush the south of the UK or miss us altogether still remains a little uncertain, but we’ll continue to assess this over the next day or two. Weather warnings may well be updated, so it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast.”

Ireland has upgraded its weather warning amid an “extremely cold” snap across the island.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as minus 8C while a Status Orange low temperature and ice warning was announced for almost all of the Republic of Ireland.

Irish national weather agency Met Eireann said the advisory applies between 8pm on Tuesday and 10am on Wednesday, applying nationwide except for Donegal, Dublin, Louth and Wexford.

This will be followed by a further warning for every county except for Donegal between 6pm Wednesday and 11am Thursday.

It means that there will be extremely cold nights with widespread frost, ice and lying snow.

A major incident was declared in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire on Monday after rain brought severe flooding in the Midlands.

Murray Turner, a Liberal Democrat councillor at South Kesteven District Council in Lincolnshire, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme rescue operations had been going on “all day” on Monday.

The area faced bad flooding at the end of 2023 and Cllr Murray said Lincolnshire County Council had been expected to produce a section 19 report to explain the flooding and how agencies could work together to better deal with it in future.

“Now, despite much pressure from the local parish councillors and myself as district councillor throughout 2024, those section 19 reports have never been received,” Cllr Turner said.

“So what’s been happening is we’re waiting for the next inevitable flooding incident and it’s producing very bad scenes in the village.

“You’re walking through silty mud in your front room and you’ve got no power. It’s not very good at all.”

Manchester airport runways reopen after snow disruptions cause flight delays and diversions

For the third time in as many days, Manchester Airport was forced to temporarily close both runways due to heavy snowfall. Earlier today, the airport announced the closures on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the extreme weather necessitated the shutdown. While the runways have since reopened, the disruption is expected to cause lingering delays.

Overnight, several flights destined for Manchester were diverted, with at least 16 planes rerouted between 10pm and 1am. Affected flights landed at alternative airports, including Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Stansted, and Prestwick, as reported by real-time flight tracking service Flightradar24.

As of this morning, only one flight departing from Manchester has been canceled, though several others are experiencing delays.

Around 200 flood warnings across England as environment minister issues reassurances

Across England, there are 203 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, and 300 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible.

There is also a single severe flood warning, meaning danger to life, active in Leicestershire.

Commuters suffered travel misery on Monday, with major roads closed and railway lines blocked.

At a Lincolnshire primary school, parents were told to stay away until the end of the day, with fire brigade vehicles ready to carry children through the floodwaters.

Hundreds of schools were closed across the country, in areas including Lancashire, Yorkshire and north-east Scotland.

In the Commons, environment minister Emma Hardy told MPs flooding was “a personal priority” for her, adding that the Environment Agency was particularly concerned about Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.

Warning of further “localised” flooding to come over the next 24 to 36 hours, she pledged to overhaul the government’s approach to funding flood defences “to ensure the challenges facing businesses and rural and coastal communities are taken into account when delivering flood protection”.

About 40 flood warnings in Licolnshire alone

Lincolnshire Resilience Forum said 40 flood warnings and 29 flood alerts were in place across the county, with reports of 62 properties “internally flooded”. There are 203 flood warnings and one severe flood warning active across England as a whole.

“We are keeping a really close watch on this as it develops because we know that there might potentially be more flooding, particularly in areas which may be affected by tidal waters,” a statement from Lincolnshire Resilience Forum said.

It also said emergency services were on standby at Greatford, near Stamford, to monitor the West Glen River, which it said threatened to inundate 49 properties in the area.

Pub owner rescues woman in Leicestershire

One woman was rescued from a car by a pub owner in Leicestershire who waded up to his chest in frigid floodwaters to pull her from the vehicle and carry her to safety.

Cimi Kazazi, the owner of the Italian Greyhound in Great Glen, had arrived at his business in the morning to find it partially under water, Luigi Salcini, the pub manager told the Associated Press.

The woman had tried to drive to her house when her car, covered with a dusting of snow from the night before, got stuck. Eventually the water rose up to the windows.

“She started to drive but realised the car was deeper and she started going down with the water,” Mr Salcini said.

“She started to scream, ‘Help’ and we came out and Cimi went to rescue her.”

Nearly 60 people were rescued from swamped homes and vehicles, the Leicestershire fire service said on the X social media platform. Emergency workers were trying to pluck children from a school in Edenham, where they were safe but stranded, the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum posted on X.

Dozens of people were rescued from flooded homes and stranded cars yesterday as a wet and cold spell continued to disrupt life across the country, with more wintry weather expected.

Hundreds of schools were closed for the first day of classes of 2025, trains were halted and commuters experienced significant disruption as sections of motorways and major roads were closed from high water and snow that made driving hazardous.

Much of the UK has been hit by strong winds and periods of precipitation that struck before New Year’s Day and snuffed out several fireworks displays and other celebrations. Several communities have faced significant flooding since the start of the year.

The body of a man recovered from an area of flooding in North Yorkshire has been formally identified, police said.

Authorities have not yet released his name, saying that efforts to trace his next of kin are ongoing.

The man’s body was recovered from a flooded area near the River Aire on Monday. North Yorkshire Police said there were no suspicions of wrongdoing.

A major incident was declared by authorities in Lincolnshire yesterday night, with a warning that more flooding could occur this morning.Lincolnshire Resilience Forum said 34 flood warnings and 29 flood alerts were in place across the county, with reports of 62 properties “internally flooded”.

“We are keeping a really close watch on this as it develops because we know that there might potentially be more flooding, particularly in areas which may be affected by tidal waters,” a statement said.

Fresh weather warnings have come into force in parts of the UK a day after severe flooding and snow caused travel disruption and school closures.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place amid fears that more flooding could be on the way.

A snow and ice warning is in place across most of southwest England and Wales, and parts of northwest England and the West Midlands, until 10am this morning.

The same warning is in place for western and northern parts of Scotland until midday, and in Northern Ireland until 11am.

A critical incident has been declared by East Midlands Ambulance for the first time ever, with flooding partly responsible for the “level of escalation”.

Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts are in place across the country as wintry conditions continue to cause travel disruption and school closures across the UK.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice come into force across large parts of the UK on Monday afternoon and will remain in place into Tuesday.

Many commuters suffered travel disruption on Monday morning, with major roads closed and railway lines blocked.

At 9pm, the Environment Agency had one severe flood warning, where there is potential danger to life, 186 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, and 302 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, active across England.

At the same time, National Resources Wales had two flood warnings and 16 flood alerts in place.

Flights cancelled at Aberdeen Airport as staff unable to de-ice planes

Airline companies based at Aberdeen Airport have had to cancel and delay flights as they have been unable to de-ice planes, with many being rerouted through Edinburgh Airport.

Although the runway at the airport remains open and operational, the respective airline companies have had no choice but to make the decision.

A spokesman for Aberdeen International Airport said: “We understand how frustrating delays can be, especially during challenging weather conditions.

“While the airport is responsible for de-icing runways and taxiways to ensure safe take-offs and landings, the de-icing of individual aircraft is managed by the airlines and their contracted ground handling teams.

“Aberdeen International Airport has remained open and operational due to the hard work of our team in maintaining the airfield.”

Showers are also due to fall as rain or sleet on lower ground on Monday evening, with forecasters warning this could lead to a risk of icy stretches.

Fresh snow and ice warnings have been issued as freezing weather is continuing to cause travel chaos, school closures and multiple major incidents to be declared due to widespread flooding that has left children stranded.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said it declared a major incident in response to widespread flooding across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland on Monday morning, after receiving more than 200 calls. Crews have freed cars stuck in flood water, evacuated residents from flooded homes, and rescued at least 17 members of the public.

Lincolnshire Resilience Forum announced that a major incident had been declared in Lincolnshire on Monday afternoon, with emergency services having to rescue children stranded at a school in Edenham amid flooding.

The Met Office has warned that there is a chance of further snow in the southwest on Wednesday, with a yellow weather warning in place from 9am until midnight.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mike Silverstone, explained: “There is a chance of a further spell of rain, sleet and snow moving in from the southwest on Wednesday to affect some southern parts of the UK.”

“Whilst not all those in the warning area may be affected, it is possible that that 2-5 cm of snow may accumulate fairly widely. Whether this system will brush the south of the UK or miss us altogether still remains a little uncertain, but we’ll continue to assess this over the next day or two. Weather warnings may well be updated, so it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast.”
