Illustrator and cartoonist Jules Faber talks with Dr. Karl about the creative process, using “Karl, the Universe and Everything” as a case study. They talk about the science of illustration, and the illustration of science. Why are some images louder? Do cartoonists speak a primitive language? Jules is president of the Australian Cartoonists Association and Carl is featured in his latest book ‘Carl, Space and Everything’ We’re going to preview some of the stories. Shameless self-promotion? You are the judge.
Jules is a well-known Australian book illustrator, but this is her first adventure with Dr Carl. His passion for scientific illustration began in the late 90s when he was studying animation. At the time, Jules was leafing through Carl’s previous books. I had never thought about illustrating books before, but I felt strongly that I could create illustrations like the ones in this book, so I planted the seed. Years later, Jules recalled that moment when she was asked to illustrate the first piece in the WeirDo series by Anh Do. And so began my bucket list ambition to paint for Dr. Karl. The rest, as they say, is scientifically accurate history.
