Ruthless Leeds were unstoppable, extending their unbeaten home run in all comps to 14 games, as they hit seven past a woeful Cardiff side.
Goals from Brenden Aaronson, Manor Solomon, Dan James, Joel Piroe, Willy Gnonto and Mateo Joseph means Daniel Farke’s side remain top of the championship/”>championship, two points ahead of Sheffield United, who won 1-0 at Derby.
But the Whites’ goal difference is now 14 better than Burnley’s +27 as the Clarets were held to a goalless draw at Portsmouth.
Leeds’ 7-0 win against Cardiff was their biggest league win since March 1972, beating Southampton by the same scoreline in the top-flight.
Leeds United boss Daniel Farke told BBC Radio Leeds:
“After a win always relief, but winning with such an impressive scoreline makes it more special.
“We have said this league is relentless and to succeed you need to become relentless yourselves and that is more or less what we have shown today.
“What I liked a lot about this performance is in the last 20 minutes when we were 4-0 and 5-0 up we still had the desire to sprint back and press and defend the clean sheet and also the intention to create more chances and to score further goals.
“We perhaps could have scored even more goals.”
Cardiff City boss Omer Riza told BBC Radio Wales: “Brutal. I’m very disappointed. I can only apologise to the travelling fans.
“We knew we were coming up against a tough and resilient Leeds who do not give away too many opportunities and who create a lot and it is a painful result.
“To lose 7-0 is unacceptable really, no matter how good the opposition is, but we have to move forwards.
“Leeds are very good. But we lacked at really important moments in the game. We said about not giving the ball away cheaply because Leeds will punish you and we did that on numerous occasions.”
Adam Pope (BBC Radio Leeds commentator): What a performance! Sensational. People are staying in just to revel. Some results stay with you. If Leeds go up this season then people will be saying were you there at the 7-0? Every single Leeds players has a smile, they’ve been absolutely dominant today. What a day it has been.
Simon Grayson (Ex-Leeds manager on BBC Radio Leeds): “It was an all-round team performance of the highest magnitude. It’s a statement result to the rest of the league. Everyone will be going what a result that is for Leeds. It was a 7-0 performance of being ruthless of the highest order. Daniel Farke and the supporters will be delighted but they won’t be popping the champagne just yet with tough game at Coventry on Wednesday.
“Leeds were so ruthless and that’s what I was impressed by. They were looking for more goals and determined to keep the clean sheet. It was really strong performance. The supporters played their part and the team thrive off that. It was a mixture of both. It’s good to get goals from all over the pitch. They all wanted to score and they were celebrating together.”
Twitter users reacted as a ruthless Leeds put in an unstoppable performances as they hit seven past a woeful Cardiff…
@lufc_davet: Absolutely outstanding from every player ! What a difference having firpo in that side makes. Chuffed for piroe and Joseph bagging too MOT
@pickers8: What a performance 👏 . Amazing. Piroe and Firpo were class!
@tobtipp: Statement result, always figured we’ve have a day like that under #Bielsa but never came about. There are any number of teams I’d prefer to stuff 7 with, but #Cardiff is a little sweet, to be honest….
@c_ellis92: If stats prove anything, this has been long overdue! Cardiff were terrible, but who cares. 6 different goalscorers as well. Hard to pick a MOTM out of that one! #lufc
@JamesPearson25: Incredible, what a team performance. Superb from the boys. I’d have taken any win but this was special. Keep up the good work
@Chr15PG: If any fucker is still saying Farke out after that, please take a long walk off a short plank. That was incredible #LUFC
@gandalflufc: A huge win today, important not to get carried away after a result like that, we have to stay consistent now, every game is going to be tough from now until the end, we have a very tough and important run of games now. #lufc
@Tomtownend99: Jokes aside I was sat below the Cardiff fans that did follow and even when we’d scored 5 or 6 a section of them at least we’re still singing. Fairplay to those that travelled. Try not to enjoy the highlights too much 😉
@Jonno2601: Ouch! Riza got it wrong, not a Ralls game. Needed players who could take the ball in tight spaces and turn. Ralls passing backwards kept the pressure on us. Leeds easily the best team we’ve faced this season, their pace is frightening, one thing we missive massively. Move on 🐦
@guildfdbluebird: Let’s be honest it could have been more, pace absolutely killed us, each goal seemed rinse and repeat of the first, Leeds are good but we should not be folding as easy as that, I hope January was not a false dawn, we need a massive reaction, embarrassing
@jaymanlufc: Only 7 🤦♀️😩😩 bit disappointing tbh should of easily been 14-15 was like playing our local pub Sunday morning side
@neddthomas: Had to laugh at times at now bad that was. Leeds are quality but we were beyond awful, just capitulated. Most of all feel sorry for the fans that bothered to travel
@CantonEndSR: Regardless of squad value etc etc that was an absolutely pathetic performance. Teams with pace just rip us apart down both sides and whilst they aren’t as clinical as Leeds were today there have been similar games this season. Each and every player should be ashamed of that.
Who put the ball in the Cardiff net?
Half the fooking team did 🤣 🎶 #lufc pic.twitter.com/YnlnbGmjoG— Debbington (@DebsHLUFC) February 1, 2025
