Tyrell Malacia is set to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window after Ruben Amorim sanctioned his departure.
The defender joined United from Feyenoord in 2022 in a £13million deal, becoming Erik ten Hag’s first signing for the club.
He performed well in his debut season, winning the Carabao Cup, but his career has derailed after suffering a horrible knee injury at the end of that campaign.
After undergoing surgery, Malacia was ruled out for the next 18 months, only returning to the pitch in November, making five appearances since.
However, it does not appear he has much of a future under new head coach Amorim, with reports from the Netherlands claiming that the Dutch international will leave Old Trafford in the next few weeks.
It is said that on Friday, United and Amorim told Malacia he was free to look for a new club and it is expected he will depart on loan for the rest of the season.
It is not known where the 25-year-old may end up but several clubs in Europe’s top leagues have enquired about his availability.
Letting Malacia leave could be risky for the Red Devils as Luke Shaw is the only other natural left-back at the club and has plenty of injury issues himself.
Amorim has been heavily reliant on Diogo Dalot to play as his left-wingback, while Noussair Mazraoui can also play in that position.
After making his Premier League return in the defeat at Arsenal last month,Amorim said Malacia was among those playing with a ‘time limit’, expressing concern over his fitness and his ability to adapt to his high-pressing tactics.
‘I like to have all the squad fit. Harry Maguire has a time limit, Tyrell Malacia has a time limit, Mason Mount has a time limit, Leny Yoro has a real time limit,’ the United boss said.
‘So we have to manage winning games, a different methodology, different way of playing, more meters to press. [If] they have a little bit risk of injury, they will not play. So we have to have everyone to work, to play and to improve the squad.’
It remains to be seen if Malacia will feature for United when they host Brighton on Sunday.
