Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted winger Alejandro Garnacho needs to learn to play better in his relatively new role.
Garnacho only started five of Amorim’s 13 games as United manager and was left out of the match-day squad for the derby win against Manchester City.
There have been suggestions that United may be willing to sell Garnacho, sparking interest from Napoli, who have identified the Argentine as the perfect replacement for Juvica Kvaratasqueria.
Garnacho has played primarily as a left-sided winger for United, but has adapted to the unfamiliar position of being one of two number 10s behind the striker in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation. are forced to do so.
Speaking in a closed-door corner of United’s press conference ahead of United’s Premier League game against Southampton on Thursday, Amorim was asked if he thought Garnacho had a bright future at United. The Portuguese coach replied: he has talent. He needs to learn to play in a different position. He needs to play better inside. ”
“He improves a lot in the recovery position when he doesn’t have the ball. But when you’re doing that, sometimes you’re not in the right place to make the transition like you’ve been in the past. I like to build up and get to the final third.”
“He’s finding the best way to play in this system. He’s improving in training. He started the last game. We’ll see tomorrow. He’s changed the way he looks at himself. I think so.”
Regarding his future team, Amorim said: I feel like we felt like we were easy to play, especially in our recent home games. And we have to be honest about it. ”
“So if we compete the right way, it’s going to be hard to beat any opponent. That’s what I wanted. That’s what I felt the last two games. That’s (pride) Well, I think we need to think about it and we need to feel it.”
On yet another occasion, Amorim lamented United’s struggles in front of goal.
“Again, I think we lack goals. This team has scored a lot of goals in the past from transitions, not from build-ups in the opposition half of the pitch. So we’ll see tomorrow. Let’s see. We have a lot to improve.”
“I think as a team, we’re not used to spending a lot of time in the opponent’s final third. We’ve had some games here that we’ve lost, we’ve been in control, but the threat is It wasn’t there. And it takes time to train. And the players need a lot of time during training and during games to be in good shape at the moment. And as you can see, I’ve watched a lot of games and we’ve scored a lot of goals, like Garnacho and Rashford. , then we see that the difference in our goals is always negative and still negative.
“And I think that’s our team’s biggest problem: the lack of goals and the ability to play in the opponent’s final third, the ability to control the game, the ability to control the game more. So we know that. We need time to train. We try to pass on the information, but it’s harder to score that way than in transition.”
Amorim provided updates on the injury status of a number of players, including Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.
“Harry was unwell in the last game. He ended up dying, but that’s what I want for every player. (Against the Saints?) Harry, let’s see. I We can’t afford to lose him, so let’s see. I think Martinez will be fine. Diogo can’t play – it’s his fault!”
“Luke Shaw is closer than Mason Mount. Mason Mount will take a little more time. Luke, I’ll see you again in a week or two. Let’s see if he comes back.”
Amorim denied any suggestion that Mount would miss the rest of the season.
