James has had recurring knee and hamstring issues over the past few seasons.
Since becoming Chelsea captain at the start of last season, he has started just eight top-flight games.
His previous league appearance was an eight-minute cameo against Arsenal in November, and his last goal came against AC Milan in October 2022.
On Saturday, the England international played 45 minutes in the FA Cup match against Morecambe, marking his return from a setback in the last two months.
Managed for game time, he came on from 56 minutes against Bournemouth and generally did well against tricky winger Antoine Semenyo.
But James’ biggest impact on Tuesday was in front of goal.
Talisman Cole Palmer handed over free-kick duties to James, who rewarded his team-mates’ faith by curling in from 20 yards out.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said: “Reiss can be compared to Cole when it comes to free-kicks, because he is very good.” “We scored Reese and he scored a goal. We’re all happy because at least we got a point.”
According to former Premier League striker Glenn Murray, it was a strike with “speed, power and a bit of a change of direction”.
“He deserved it. That moment is difficult for any player,” Maresca added.
“Right now, his goal is to stay fit until the end. He will help us play as we want.”
