QRCS dispatches medical convoy to Somalia
Doha, January 11 (QNA) – Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) collaborates with the Somali Ministry of Health (MOH) to conduct cardiac catheterizations on 70 children with congenital heart defects at a Somali hospital. The Little Hearts medical convoy was dispatched to Somalia to carry out the Sudan Specialist Hospital (SSSH) in Mogadishu.
The convoy’s inauguration ceremony, carried out by volunteer medical staff from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Sidra Medicine, was attended by Her Excellency Mariam Mohamed Hussein, Somalia’s Minister of Health, along with several representatives of relevant humanitarian organizations.
The convoy, worth over Rs 952,000, aims to screen 200 children with heart conditions and select 70 patients for therapeutic cardiac catheterization.
The convoy’s action plan includes the participation of 170 local medical professionals, including basic pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) doctors and nurses, to deal with critically ill pediatric patients, in collaboration with the Somali Ministry of Health. This included holding a two-day capacity building workshop for Somali Medical Association.
During the first four days of the convoy, 35 cardiac catheterizations were performed with 100% success, including complex cases that required critical procedures. And one of those beneficiaries was a 17-day-old child born with a rare congenital heart defect. (QNA)
