Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his regime plans to hold talks with Afghanistan to preserve Sistan and Baluchestan provinces’ water rights from the Helmand River, also known as Hilmand.
President Pezeshkian made the remarks in an interview with local television channels in Sistan and Baluchestan provinces on Friday night, before concluding a two-day visit to the southeastern provinces.
Pezeshkian said the governor will visit Afghanistan to discuss Iranian water rights with Afghan officials, adding that the Governor General’s Office and the Ministry of Energy are also pursuing other related issues.
The President also pointed to the current situation in Sistan-Baluchestan province, which has long borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and said that the province has unique capabilities to play an important role in the implementation of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). said. ).
Iran’s claim to water rights is based on a treaty signed in 1973, which has been subject to detailed negotiations at various levels. Iranian officials have always emphasized the correct implementation of the 1973 Hilmand River Treaty between Iran and Afghanistan.
