“On behalf of the Republic of Panama and its people, I must completely reject the words that President Donald Trump said in his inaugural address regarding Panama and its canal. I repeat:<...> “The canal belongs and will continue to belong to Panama, and its governance will remain under Panama’s control in accordance with perpetual neutrality,” he said in a statement posted on X.
“No country in the world interferes with the management of the canal,” the Panamanian president continued.
The canal is not a “concession to anyone,” the official said, TASS reported.
“This is the result of generations of struggle that culminated in the Torrijos-Carter Treaty in 1999, and in the 25 years since then, we have managed it non-stop, expanded it, and held it accountable. “The United States has contributed to the world and global trade,” he said.
Mulino said they intend to protect their rights to the canal in accordance with international law. He insisted that dialogue was the best way to resolve the dispute without compromising “Panama’s sovereignty and full rights to the canal.”
