Dunn, who was seen with Skeens on the MLB All-Star red carpet, was an avid supporter of the pitcher.
In an effort to acquire a piece of Skeens history, the Pirates offered, in exchange for the card, two season tickets for the next 30 years behind home plate, a game against Skeens and a great, and two jerseys autographed by Skeens.
Pittsburgh also offered 30-person softball games at PNC Park, coaching by Pirates alumni, and private tours of Pirate City and LECOM Park. The latter tour was part of the team’s spring training facility in Florida.
The Pirates even teased a “more unique experience” as part of the Cards trade.
Dunn then upped the stakes, including the chance to watch a Pirates game together in his suite.
In response to the fan’s decision, Topps posted the 11-year-old’s diary after drawing the card.
He called winning the card a “dream come true” and said he “started jumping all over the place” in celebration.
Pirates had a rather somber reaction to the news that fans had rejected the offer.
“Well…we’re disappointed not to be able to see you all at home base for 30 seasons,” the team wrote to X.
Skeens, 22, had a stellar rookie year that included being named an All-Star and quickly established himself as one of the best pitchers in the sport.
