KUALA LUMPUR: At a time when sustainability has become a key driver for business, Mondelēz Malaysia is redoubling its commitment and efforts to lead the future of snacking with its ‘Snacks Made Right’ strategy.
Mondelez Malaysia and Singapore Managing Director Narmeen Khan said Mondelez Malaysia has positioned itself at the forefront of the snack industry and is integrating sustainability into its growth agenda through its strategy.
She emphasized that the company is on a mission to lead the future of snacking by delivering the right snack at the right time and in the right way.
“For us, sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it is one of the four pillars of our Vision 2030 growth strategy. By embedding sustainability into our business, we are committed to increasing profitability while increasing We believe we can have a tangible impact on people and the planet,” Narmeen said in an exclusive interview with SunBiz.
He said the company has implemented extensive sustainability measures and improved operational efficiency.
“Key initiatives include sourcing raw materials more sustainably and increasing the resilience of supply chains; reducing our environmental footprint by sourcing raw materials more sustainably; as well as improve the resilience of the supply chain. This allows us to reduce risks and manage costs more effectively,” Narmeen explained.
He said Mondelez’s commitment to climate-friendly operations extends to its manufacturing processes, with waste minimization as well as reduced energy and water consumption leading to lower operating costs.
“As part of our efforts to make packaging more circular, we are using fewer materials and promoting recyclable or biodegradable alternatives. These innovations are driving consumer demand for responsible products. It not only meets our needs, but also presents significant opportunities for cost savings in the long run.”
Narmeen said Malaysian consumer preferences are shifting towards healthier and more sustainable snacking options and Mondelez is also embracing this trend.
“We have expanded our wellness portfolio and aligned our products to the ‘Healthier Choices’ standard. This includes reducing sugar, sodium and saturated fat in snacks while maintaining the flavor that Malaysians love.
“We are keenly aware of the growing consumer demand for healthier and more sustainable snack options. Our #JomSnekBijak initiative, in collaboration with nutrition experts, We promote full eating and sustainability awareness, ensuring our products resonate with today’s consumers,” said Narmeen.
To reduce plastic waste, Mondelez has introduced recyclable packaging, with 98% of its packaging in Southeast Asia designed to be recyclable.
Mr Narmeen said Mondelēz Malaysia’s sustainability efforts extend throughout its supply chain. The company’s manufacturing facilities in Shah Alam, Selangor and Perai, Penang incorporate renewable energy sources such as rooftop solar panels, which currently account for almost half of its total electricity consumption.
She said Mondelez is also taking steps to innovate its packaging, aiming to make 98% of its packaging recyclable by 2025.
“The company is a founding member of the Malaysia Recycling Alliance and has demonstrated a commitment to recycle at least 25% of its members’ packaging by 2025.
“Creating a more sustainable supply chain is at the heart of our business. In line with our sustainability goals, we are reducing our reliance on virgin plastics and using alternative materials.” Narmeen said.
