Manchester United have reportedly reinstated a fan’s season ticket with dementia after his family informed him that the club had canceled his seat because he did not own a mobile phone.
My grandfather had been a regular at Old Trafford for 45 years, but the supporter’s family were outraged to learn of the cancellation.
He had entered the premises using a paper ticket that could not be scanned. As a result, United stewards had not registered his QR code and after five consecutive games of his attendance record, his family was informed that his seat had been refunded.
The story was shared on social media and went viral, garnering over 1 million views.
This sparked anger from sections of the fan base, demanding that the club act quickly to rectify the situation.
The Telegraph said United worked “with haste” to resolve the issue to avoid further criticism or embarrassment.
They contacted the family within an hour and reinstated the ticket. United are understood to have made “adjustments to standard entry protocols to support him”.
According to the Telegraph, “A source familiar with the situation said the claims shared on social media did not accurately reflect what actually happened. The situation was described as “complex”. . Several emails from United were not answered until the refund was issued. ”
The man’s family says they will take steps to determine what alternative actions United has taken before commenting again on the matter.
This season, United introduced significant changes to their ticketing system, with fans having to access digital tickets through the club’s official app.
Your ticket will be linked to the device you use and the QR code for entry will remain hidden until three hours before kick-off.
United return to action on Thursday when they take on Rangers in the Europa League. Kickoff is 20:00 Japan time.
