By now, you’ve probably read thousands of words of analysis about last week’s election. Some people, even if they were not fully informed, saw the choice of the majority of American voters to return a felon and would-be authoritarian to the White House as a devastation to their lives and hopes. The process has been experienced as a threat and after 10 days. Respecting the time required for such personal reflection is something that everyone who takes socialist principles seriously must do. But for those looking for more discussion and insight to deal with things outwardly and be ready to act in solidarity in the days to come, Religious Socialism offers some reading material here. I will present it to you. Long-time RS contributor Andrew Wilkes delves into the “shoulds” and “shoulds” to uncover the insidious undercurrents of patriarchy that pervade our cultural waters. asks us to dig into harmful assumptions. Robert P. Jones examines the damage white Christians inflicted in this election, and Mark Engler and Paul Engler predict a rise in resistance movements for the coming era. Peter Dreier makes 25 good points about what just happened. The National Council of Elders’ Breaking the Silence project offers resources, webinars, and videos that offer perspectives that may be comforting. Many RS members recommend the work of Buddhist Rebecca Solnit. You can see two of her works here and here. And thank you to Travis Donoho for sending me a video of her poem about joy as strategy.
