Los Angeles Natural History Museum’s (NHM), a 6,967-m2 (75,000-sf) expansion project named NHM Commons, recently opened to the public.
The renovation features a new welcome center, an outdoor plaza, a 400-seat community theater, and special exhibits.
The $75-million NHM Commons expansion and renovation project, designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners, with landscape architecture by Studio-MLA and exhibition spaces designed by Studio Joseph, features a transparent glass facade.
Tongva artist Lazaro Arvizu Jr. created bedrock mortar installations as part of the garden and plaza’s educational components. The plaza also features sustainable planting, depicting the L.A. Basin’s waterways, and open spaces for community use.
With an outdoor amphitheater and open courtyard, it will be a gathering point for events, school groups, and anyone visiting the park.
The Natural History Museum (NHM) is one of Los Angeles’s oldest cultural institutions in Exposition Park. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
