With New York City heading into the dog days of winter, wearing anything but core black, brown, or gray colors seems unfathomable—but not for Katie Holmes, who wore the most unexpected color choice for her latest pair of pants, despite being bundled up from head to toe.
The actress was spotted on January 18 on her way to Our Town on Broadway, wearing an ensemble that had all of her favorite winter staples in classic colors. Holmes’s outerwear consisted of black wool peacoat that extended down to her shins; underneath, she wore a heather gray knit crewneck sweater, and added a knit beanie in a similar shade worn to keep her head covered.
The bottom half of the 46-year-old’s outfit was a different story, though—Holmes gave her cozy ensemble a massive pop of color by wearing neon red pants that flares into a subtle bootcut. Against the black and gray tones of her outfit, the bottoms popped and made a major fashion statement, and looked even brighter against her classic white sneakers.
The Dawson’s Creek alumna completed the entire look with more staples, which included a buttery soft leather tote bag slung casually over her shoulder, and a pair of square frames to block her eyes from the harsh winter sun. Consider the bold look an extension of Holmes’s winter outfit formula, which focuses first and foremost on staying as warm as possible.
“In the winter months [my outfit formula] is usually based on more, and the double layer,” she told InStyle in December. “So for now, it’s a lot of pants that I can put yoga pants underneath and cozy sweaters and just try to have some sort of balance to it. ”
