In the green technology takeover, it appears that the main motivation for UK consumers to switch to green technology is saving money rather than environmental concerns.
This is according to EcoExpert’s 2024 National Home Energy Survey, which asked 2,184 UK adults about their motivations for adopting sustainable technologies.
The survey found that British people are buying more green technology, with purchases of solar panels up 13 percentage points year-on-year and purchases of heat pumps up 5%.
Respondents were more likely to purchase green technology due to their own financial concerns than environmental concerns.
The top reason is to save money on energy bills, cited by more than half (51%) of all adults.
In contrast, only 15% of adults purchased green technology due to environmental concerns, and 18% did so due to government incentives.
Graham Hendra, a homeowner from Southampton, UK, told Eco Expert that the reason he installs low-carbon technology in his home is because he wants to “save money on his monthly bill” and that he is “not handing over a lot of money to the energy company.” “I don’t like it,” he said.
Mr Hendra added: “My electricity bill is pretty high so I’d like to reduce my electricity bill by not buying as much from the National Grid.” Carbon offsets are a bonus. ”

Christopher McFadden, energy expert at Eco Expert, said:
“Renewable energy systems, whether traditional like solar panels and wind turbines or up-and-coming systems like micro-CHP, are a great way to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
“You should think of it like an investment. If it saves you money now and in the future, you don’t have to worry about rising utility bills, and it increases the value of your home, then that’s not a bad thing.”
