Chennai, Jan 4 (PTI) For India to become a prosperous nation, it must address issues such as ‘inequality’, provide access to basic health care and education, and provide skills and training for young people. Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said here. Saturday.
Speaking at the Global Alumni Association (GAM2025) at NIT Tiruchirappalli, the top businessman said India is in a unique position to take advantage of global uncertainties and that some of the major changes currently underway will play to India’s strengths. He said he was alive.
“If we want India to be a prosperous country, what we have to deal with is inequality, inequality in every sense of the word.Simply put, the per capita income of the southern states is lower than that of the eastern and northern states. “We need to fix this inequality,” he said.
Elaborating on his argument, he said access to basic health care and education is key.
“When we talk about access, we’re not just talking about hospitals. We also need access to education, to doctors and teachers. We’re far below the global standards set by the World Health Organization,” he said.
“Most of our doctors (two-thirds of them) live in urban areas, but two-thirds of our population lives in rural areas. This is the problem. In terms of education, at least 1 million There is a shortage of teachers,” he said.
Observing that more than 1 million people enter the job market every year, he said the workforce needs to be skilled and the country’s labor productivity is “stunningly” low compared to countries such as the United States.
“One of the problems we have is that most of our people are in informal jobs. There are very few people in formal jobs in this country,” he said. Ta.
Padma Bhushan awardee Chandrasekaran said if India can address all these concerns, something special will emerge.
“Global trends such as sustainability, renewable energy and artificial intelligence are working in India’s favor and we can play an important role,” he said.
He said India needed to seriously invest in research as the number of PhDs in India was “very low compared to the US or China”.
“We need to invest in research, whether it’s materials or life sciences. I think as a country we need to give confidence and support to our young people. We have a unique opportunity,” he said.
