For more than 24 years, astronauts have continuously lived on the space station, testing technology, performing science, and developing the skills needed to explore places far from Earth. Astronauts aboard the orbiting laboratory communicate 24 hours a day with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston through the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) near-space network.
The important research and technology exploration conducted aboard the space station benefits people on Earth and lays the foundation for other agencies’ missions. As part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, the agency will send astronauts to the moon in preparation for future human exploration of Mars. Inspiring the Artemis generation of explorers and ensuring America continues to lead in space exploration and discovery.
