This new service is expected to be established at the end of 2026, according to reports in the Guardian. The online hub would bring together individual train operators’ ticket websites to provide consumers with the best price possible.
It is understood that this will run alongside other private sector services like Trainline.
A statement from the DfT read: “After Great British Railways is established following legislation, it will retail online by bringing together individual train operators’ ticket websites.
“It will work alongside a thriving private sector retail market, where all rail retailers can compete in an open and fair manner. The private sector will continue to play a key role in driving growth through innovation and investment, and encouraging more people to choose rail.”
Jody Ford, chief executive of Trainline, said: “As the UK Government further outlines Great British Railways’ approach to retailing, we welcome their unequivocal commitment to a competitive retail market, underpinned by a level playing field, and recognition of the value and innovation that brings to rail users.
“Trainline is the UK’s No1 travel app, with 18 million customers and the highest customer trust scores in the industry. We have innovated to build solutions customers love over 25 years , giving them the ease and value they desire, and helping to grow demand for rail in the UK.”
The Standard has approached the DfT for further information.
Getting a railcard can allow you to save one third on ticket prices

Here is how you can currently buy the cheapest UK rail tickets.
Network Rail releases its tickets around 12 weeks ahead of departure and it is usually cheaper to book your journey sooner rather than later.
Not the most original advice, and you’ll be aware that you can save one third on tickets with a 16-24, 25-30 or senior railcard.
But the government’s website also lists a railcard for travelling with your chosen friend, a veterans railcard, and don’t miss the Network Railcard for discounts on journeys in the southeast and around London.
… and make sure to use this simple – but totally legit hack
If you buy your next railcard on the eve of your next birthday (for the 25-30 option at least) you can enjoy the benefit for a little longer – almost up to the age of 32.
Check to see if two single tickets are cheaper than a return
Fairly sage advice – which apps such as the Trainline should make you aware of.
Split My Fare is an increasingly trusted option which allows passengers to save up to (a claimed) 90 per cent on some journeys.
The site lists the example: “Instead of buying a single ticket from Leeds to Glasgow for £120.00, you can save £96.20 with Split My Fare by buying split tickets from Leeds to Bingley, Bingley to Motherwell, and Motherwell to Glasgow for a total of £23.80. You stay on the same Leeds to Glasgow route and don’t have to make additional changes.”
And some advice for Londoners is to link your Oyster card to your railcard as this can save you money on some journeys, such as Tube fares during off-peak times.
