While Meghan Markle continues to mourn the loss of her dog, Guy, one cherished memory in particular has recently resurfaced with regard to the beloved beagle: Prince Harry’s proposal. As it turns out, Guy played a pivotal role when the Duke of Sussex got down on one knee back in 2017.
Describing the scene in his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry recounted the sequence of events that led to their engagement. After popping some champagne in the kitchen of Nottingham Cottage where the couple lived, Harry and Guy led Markle outside, where a blanket lay in the garden surrounded by candles. Guy promptly sat down to oversee the proposal.
“Now I knelt on the blanket, Guy at my side. Both of us looked up searchingly at Meg,” Prince Harry wrote. He popped the question, and then “we were crying and laughing, and petting Guy, who looked frozen solid,” he continued.
Following the proposal, Guy was also present in the glam room where Markle got her hair and makeup done on her wedding day. He then moved with the couple to California after they stepped down from senior royal duties in 2020.
“I loved that dog,” Harry wrote in Spare. “I couldn’t stop kissing him, petting him. Yes, my intense feelings for Meg spilled over onto anyone or anything she loved, but also I’d wanted a dog for so long, and I’d never been able to have one because I’d been such a nomad.”
Markle’s tribute to Guy followed her return to Instagram on January 1 after deactivating her account nearly seven years ago. She has so far used the app to promote her new Netflix cooking show, With Love, Meghan, which premieres on January 15. Along with celebrity guest Mindy Kaling, Markle revealed that Guy will also be heavily featured in the show.
“Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss,” she wrote on Instagram. “I think you may fall a little bit in love too.”
