Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United defender Jonny Evans in January this year.
The Northern Ireland international made a surprise return to Old Trafford in 2023, but was initially widely ridiculed.
However, Evans had the last laugh as he appeared in 30 games in his first season back at the club and did not look as out of place as many had expected.
Despite this, his playing time has been significantly reduced this season due to the summer acquisitions of Matthijs de Ligt and Lenny Yolo.
New manager Ruben Amorim is looking to sign defenders of his own, with the likes of academy talent Godwill Kukonki in what could be the Belfast-born player’s final season at the club. It seems so.
The Daily Record reports that Rangers are one of the clubs that could be interested in Evans.
“Jonny Evans has been proposed by the Rangers board as a transfer option to alleviate the current defensive crisis.”
He was “one of the names proposed to the manager by members of the club hierarchy, but Philippe Clement is thought to have been dissuaded from the idea due to the Northern Ireland legend’s age.”
The Rangers manager is said to be keen to sign younger players, with Leon Balogun already in the squad who can provide experience.
Former United scout Mick Brown said of the possibility of a move: “If he wants to continue playing, I think a move to Rangers would suit him.”
“They have shown some interest and, with all due respect, it will be a move to a league that is less demanding than the Premier League.”
Evans is clearly not in Coach Amorim’s plans. He only appeared in two games during Portugal’s reign and has not started since the former Sporting Lisbon manager’s debut in charge, away at Ipswich Town at the end of November.
