According to TSN’s Chris Johnston on the latest episode of Insider Trading, the Vancouver Canucks are actively gauging the market on both Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. Rumors have circulated for weeks about major issues in the locker room, largely stemming from drama between the two stars. It seems the situation is reaching a breaking point, and Vancouver appears tired of it lingering over the team.
Canucks Willing to Move One or Both
In speaking with sources around the league, Johnston noted the marketplace is hot. He spoke about the Canucks’ willingness to part with one or both of their stars.
He said:
“There’s a strong sense that trade conversations remain active on both Pettersson and Miller with rival teams at this point in time. Vancouver wants to gauge the marketplace and see what the value of the players is before making any further decisions on next steps.”
With the Canucks exploring the market for both Pettersson and Miller, the team faces a significant decision. Do they punt this season and rework their roster in the off-season? While that could be possible, Johnston shared insight into which player Vancouver is leaning toward trading.
“When it comes to Pettersson in particular, it seems as though the Canucks are considering moving him. Multiple teams are believed to have shown interest.”
Johnston’s report suggests that the Canucks may prefer keeping Miller over Pettersson. This decision likely involves more than just Miller’s leadership and vocal presence in the room—it could also be tied to the significant return Pettersson might fetch in a trade.
Johnston also recalled that a third party reminded him of trade discussions between the Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes regarding Pettersson during the past off-season. “That could be a logical landing place now,” says Johnston.
Could the Hurricanes revisit those talks and work out a blockbuster deal to acquire Pettersson? Only time will tell. There are plenty of interested teams, according to Johnston.
