IT’S Burns Night – time to raise a glass to Scotland’s greatest poet and a great excuse for a party!
Throw in one of Robert Burns’ verses and a tot of whisky and guests will soon be waxing lyrical about your hosting skills.
HAGGIS HEAVEN: Celebrate with traditional haggis. You can buy one from Aldi, with prices starting at £1.49.
Mix things up with a more modern recipe, such as beef and haggis lasagne, or beef and haggis nachos from makeitscotch.com. If you do not eat meat, try a Simon Howie vegetarian haggis for £2.25 at Asda, serves two to three.
MONSTER MASH: Cook up a delicious side dish of neeps and tatties.
Mash together boiled swede and potatoes with lashings of butter, and a good sprinkle of salt and pepper.

For an extra twist, roast the potatoes before mashing, or use cream cheese instead of butter.
CATCH OF THE DAY: Tuck into a smoked salmon pate or oatcake topped with smoked salmon as a starter. Or try Tesco Scottish garlic mussels, down from £3 to £2.50 for 500g with a Clubcard.
BERRY GOOD: Make a traditional dessert such as Cranachan. Dry-fry 40g oats, stirring occasionally, for five minutes, whip 250ml whipping cream until thick, stir in two tablespoons of clear honey and one or two tablespoons of whisky. Crush 75g raspberries, then ripple through the whisky cream along with most of the oats and raspberries.
Divide between four bowls. Scatter over the remaining oats, raspberries and a drizzle of honey.
TOP OF THE TIPPLES: You can enjoy a wee dram for a wee price. Aldi’s Glen Marnoch Islay single malt, £17.99, was awarded the maximum three stars at the 2024 Great Taste Awards.
