Eagles won by 9 runs
Eagles pulled off a fascinating 9-run victory against Southern Rocks in the 2024-25 PRO50 Championship at Harare Sports Club.
Wessly Madhevere took two wickets, two run-outs and as many catches in an all-round performance for Eagles.
Choosing to bat first after being sent in, the Eagles capitalised on a solid start from skipper Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, who scored 61 off 63, hitting seven boundaries and a six. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, late fireworks from Faraz Akram, who smashed 49 off just 40 , and Tony Munyonga’s 42 helped the Eagles post a competitive 262.
The Southern Rocks’ bowling attack was spearheaded by William Mashinge, whose 4 for 37 in 10 overs kept the Eagles from running away with the game. Roy Kaia also impressed with figures of 3 for 57 in his full quota.
The Rocks response was anchored by opener Innocent Kaia’s gritty 51 off 84 balls. Ryan Higgins, who lit up the innings with a blazing 89 off 80 balls, hitting eight boundaries and three maximums, created belief and if he had played out the full innings, Rocks would have had the win.
Higgins’ partnership with William Mashinge (34) revived the Rocks’ hopes, but the Eagles bowlers struck at crucial moments to deny them a win.
Faraz Akram led the way with three key wickets, while Wessly Madhevere and Alex Falao chipped in with two wickets apiece, ensuring the Rocks were bowled out in 48.3 overs.
Rhinos 287/7 in 41 overs (Antum Naqvi 131, Kevin Kasuza 43, Tashinga Musekiwa 41; Ernest Masuku 2-52, Luke Jongwe 2-59)
Tuskers 13/1 in 4.4 overs (Nkosana Mpofu, Tanunurwa Makoni 5*)
Match abandoned due to rain
Antum Naqvi’s 86-ball 131 was on show but it was in vain as the match at the Bulawayo Athletic Club was abandoned due to rain.
He smashed 10 sixes and seven sixes for his effort in a match reduced to 41 overs each.
Kevin Kasuza lent his hand to the effort with a handled 43 off 56, while Tashinga Musekiwa left noone wondering with 41 off 30.
Tsukers lost Nkosana Mpofu to a run-out before the rain played the part of the gods for the match.
