Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a third term in a grand swearing-in ceremony at Mumbai’s historic Azad Maidan on December 5.
Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar were also sworn in as deputy chief ministers at the star-studded event, which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Top Bollywood stars like Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan and corporate celebrities like Mukesh Ambani also attended the event.
Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office to three Mahayuti leaders. The ministers of Fadnavis’ cabinet will be sworn in later.
Fadnavis is in his third term as chief minister. His first term was from 2014 to 2019, and his second term was for five days, ending on November 25th.

The Mahayuti Alliance achieved a historic victory in the parliamentary elections by winning 235 seats in the 288-member House, overwhelming the Maha Vikas Aghadi Party (MVA), which won just 50 seats.
Fadnavis is the Bharatiya Janata Party’s most prominent face in Maharashtra, where the saffron party has relied heavily on regional parties to stay in power.
Fadnavis’ Bharatiya Janata Party had a strike rate of almost 90 per cent and won 132 seats in the 2024 assembly polls, the highest among all allies. Shinde Sena won 57 seats and Ajit Pawar’s NCP won 41 seats.
The assembly elections in Maharashtra were held on November 20th and the results were declared on November 23rd.
Besides Mr. Modi, the new government will be sworn in along with Northern Home Minister Amit Shah, Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda, Union ministers, the chief minister of the NDA-led state government, a former Maharashtra chief minister, diplomats, Actors of Marathi films were present. Industry and beneficiaries of the Ladki Bahin welfare scheme were present.
As many as 40,000 people were expected to attend the event, including workers from all three VVIP and Mahayuti parties – BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP.
