Delhi Elections 2025: The Congress on Friday fielded Alka Lamba as its candidate for the Delhi Assembly elections against Chief Minister Atishi.
Mahila Congress president was elected from Kalkaji seat.
“The Central Election Commission has approved the candidature of Alka Lamba as a parliamentary candidate from 51st Kalkaji constituency in the upcoming Delhi Legislative Assembly general elections,” the Congress said in a statement.
Responding to her candidature, Lamba said, “I don’t think I am against the CM. Arvind Kejriwal himself called Atishi an ‘interim CM’ and her tenure is only a month away. . Kejriwal will not be coming back in any case.”
As a woman holding a constitutional post, she is disrespecting her position, Lamba told PTI, adding, “Atishi has clarified her stand on being called a ‘temporary CM’ by Kejriwal. We need to be clear,” he added.
Former AAP MLA Alka Lamba returned to the Congress party in October 2019. In 2014, he resigned from the parliament and joined AAP. However, after her relationship with AAP soured over differences on several issues, she returned to the great old party.
Lamba started his political career as a student leader at a young age and was elected as the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1995 as an NSUI candidate.
On December 25, Congress announced a second list of 26 candidates. The first list of parliamentary candidates was announced on December 21st.
The last time Congress came to power in the capital was in 2013.
Elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly are scheduled for February, with AAP aiming to win a third consecutive term in the Lok Sabha.
Interestingly, although both parties are members of the Indian bloc, they are contesting the Delhi elections independently.
Earlier this week, the Congress attacked AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal over his ‘Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana’, alleging that he was making a desperate attempt to “whitewash his tarnished image”. .
Kejriwal said that if re-elected, the AAP will launch the ‘Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana’ which will provide a monthly stipend of Rs 18,000 to temple priests and gurdwara granthis.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit from New Delhi’s parliamentary constituency has vowed to file a defamation suit against Atishi and AAP MP Sanjay Singh for allegedly receiving funds from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
