The NHL Winter Classic is one of the league’s most significant events. It’s a chance to celebrate the sport in a way that so many grew up playing the game — outside on the ODR (outdoor rink). On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts the Podcast, Elliotte Friedman mentioned the possibility of one last “goodbye” for Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Both players are nearing the end of their storied careers. and the league has a perfect opportunity to honor these two icons with one final Winter Classic.
“Goodbye” Winter Classic
Crosby and Ovechkin are more than just players; they’ve defined an era. They also had a rivalry that lasted nearly two decades. A Winter Classic featuring the Penguins and Capitals would be the perfect way to spotlight their legacy one last time.
The timing couldn’t be better. Both players are still productive, but the reality is their careers are winding down. Waiting too long risks missing the moment. A farewell Winter Classic would allow the league to celebrate their contributions while they’re still in the spotlight. Plus, it would be great for marketing. The Crosby vs. Ovechkin rivalry is one of the most compelling stories in hockey, and the event would draw massive attention.
This would be the second these two would meet in the Winter Classic. The first time was back in 2011 when the Capitals won 3-1. However, that was overshadowed by Crosby’s concussion, which forced him to miss significant time afterward. However, now that both players are healthy and chasing records, it would be a great way to acknowledge this rivalry as one of the best since 2000.
As an added touch, it would be awesome to see the teams wear the same jerseys that were worn in 2011.
The NHL has always honored its legends, and there’s no better way to do that than with a Crosby-Ovechkin Winter Classic. It’s a moment fans would cherish forever and a sendoff the game’s greatest deserve.
