Nizar Kinsella of X reports that Chelsea are making several goalkeeper moves in the January transfer window in order to manage their bloated squad.
BBC sports journalist Kinsella revealed that 19-year-old Max Merrick has renewed his contract with the Blues and is set to join Hampton and Richmond on loan.
Ted Card, a year Merrick’s junior, was recalled to Chelsea from Hampton and Richmond. Card quickly established himself as a starter for the Beavers, making 22 league appearances for the club and keeping nine clean sheets. (Photomob)
It’s unclear what will happen next for the Cards, but it’s safe to assume they’ll likely be loaned out again.
Chelsea currently have five senior goalkeepers in their squad: Roberto Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Gabriel Slonina, Lukas Bergström and Marcus Bettinelli, but Djordje Petrovic, who was a frequent starter last season, is currently on loan to sister club Strasbourg.
It remains unclear whether Robert Sanchez will become Chelsea’s number one

Sanchez has established himself as Enzo Maresca’s preferred option between the goalposts, but Chelsea fans are starting to grow frustrated with the Spaniard, hampering Sanchez’s chances of competing for the Premier League title. I believe that
The former Brighton keeper conceded 23 goals in 19 league starts for the Blues, keeping only four clean sheets.
As a result, there are calls for Filip Jorgensen, who signed from Villarreal in the summer for a fee of £20.7m, to be given a chance as starting goalkeeper (BBC Sport).

Jorgensen performed well for the Blues in the Europa Conference League and, despite not playing well, kept a clean sheet in their most recent FA Cup appearance.
Maresca, who has plenty of options, has kept himself safe by relying on Sanchez, but if the Blues manager has serious title ambitions he needs to find a keeper who can keep clean sheets more reliably. It won’t happen.
