The Bank for International Settlements, BIS is hiring Data Governance Engineer within Information Governance & Management department.
This role is based in Basel, however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.
Purpose of the job:
As Data Governance Engineer you will manage the technical aspects of data governance, helping to ensure data quality, accessibility, compliance, and security across the Bank.
You will own and manage the Bank’s central data inventory and collaborate with business units to align data management practices with central data governance requirements. Technical data management knowledge and strong stakeholder engagement skills will be essential to leverage data as an asset and enable the Bank to achieve its strategic objectives.

Principal accountabilities:
- Drive and support the technical implementation of data governance processes and practices across the Bank.
- Support the technical implementation of the Bank’s central data catalogue.
- Own and manage the Bank’s central data catalogue to capture data lineage, definitions and other relevant information. Ensure the accuracy, completeness and accessibility of the catalogue.
- Implement a data classification framework to categorise data based on sensitivity, criticality and usage. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure accurate and consistent data classification.
- Develop data quality standards to monitor and improve data accuracy, completeness, and consistency, ensuring data integrity and reliability. Collaborate closely with stakeholders to address data quality issues, ensuring data is reliable and meets the required standards.
- Establish metadata standards and guidelines to capture data lineage, definitions, and other relevant information, enabling effective data governance and decision-making.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, including IT and business units, to ensure alignment and engagement in data initiatives. Collaborate on data initiatives, provide guidance, and facilitate effective communication and collaboration.
- Provide subject matter expertise and support to data committees.
- Assist in decision-making processes related to data initiatives, contribute insights and help drive effective data management practices.
- Assist in the development and delivery of training programs
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
- University degree in Information Management/Technology, Business Administration, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in data management, including experience in implementing data management and data quality processes.
- Strong expertise in data engineering gained through non-traditional paths, such as career changes or self-study.
- Experience in data modelling, lineage tracking and cataloguing tools.
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, practices and frameworks (e.g. DAMA DMBoK2).
- Knowledge of data classification frameworks and metadata management.
- Proficiency in database management software.
- Professional certification in data management (e.g. CDMP, CRISC) preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders across the organisation at all levels. Excellent team player.
- Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to communicate with data stewards, domain leads and data engineering teams to establish best practices.
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Very good written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
