BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Brookwood Baptist Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is going above and beyond to lift the spirits of families this fall.
This week they dressed up and created costumes for dozens of newborn babies for Halloween. This is an annual tradition that always brings smiles to families who sometimes spend weeks in the NICU.
“It was fun. Of course, no mother expects to spend their holidays in the NICU, so I wasn’t expecting that, which makes the NICU feel more homely. I spent many days and nights here caring for my child. You spend time just taking care of them and this becomes their second home,” said her mother, Emily Gomez.
Many of our staff are also looking forward to it. The team is trying to customize costumes based on the patient’s family and personality. This year, staff dressed Gomez’s newborn in a Frida Kahlo costume to celebrate her Hispanic heritage.
“It’s really fun to see them participate and have fun. It’s fun to see all the costumes and how much work goes into them. They really care about them here. I know that I wear it and I love it,” Gomez said.
