Novak Djokovic has said he intends to return to next year’s Australian Open if he is still “fit, healthy and motivated”.
The 37-year-old Serbian, aiming for a record-extending 11th men’s singles title, was forced to leave Friday’s semi-final match against Alexander Zverev injured.
He raised both thumbs in the air to the 15,000 fans as he left Rod Laver Arena, which he often describes as his “second home.”
Asked if this might be his last appearance at Melbourne Park, Djokovic said: “I don’t know. We have a chance. Who knows? We’ll just have to see how the season goes.
“I want to continue. But I don’t know if I’ll revise my schedule for next year.”
This is the second year in a row that Djokovic has lost in the Melbourne semi-finals.
Djokovic has pared back his schedule in recent seasons and prioritized preparation for his biggest tournaments, the four Grand Slams.
The former world number one is still aiming for her 25th women’s singles title to overtake Australia’s Margaret Court, who won the women’s singles title 24 times between 1960 and 1973.
Djokovic’s most successful Grand Slam title was the Australian Open, followed by seven Wimbledon titles.
He also won three French Open titles and four US Open titles.
“I usually like coming to Australia to play,” added seventh-seeded Djokovic.
“I’ve had the most success in my career here, so if I’m healthy and motivated, there’s no reason not to come here.”
“But there’s always a chance (that’s the last time).”
