Wicked was the undisputed cinematic event of the year—and, yes I am still holding space for it. Especially now that Ariana Grande is re-addressing those comments about all of the film’s queer undertones.
In a new interview with Variety, Grande spoke about how she tried to bring some queerness to her character, Glinda the Good Witch. “I think she’s a person who loves so much, and I do think that it goes beyond gender, and I think that’s a common theme in Oz,” she said. “I also think that the ways in which she loves Elphaba so much, and that forgiveness and that unconditional love that they share—I think they’re in love with each other. I know, yes, it’s platonic…”
Grande then stopped herself from spoiling any details about how the relationship will develop in the sequel, saying only, “We’ll talk about it more in depth in movie two.”
In other words, we may be getting even more insight into Glinda’s queerness in Wicked: For Good.
Grande previously spoke about how some fans “ship” a relationship between the two witches. Glinda “might be a little in the closet,” she said to Gay Times, adding, “You never know, give it a little more time. It is just a true love, and I think that transcends sexuality. It’s a deep safety within each other and that’s why [fans] probably ship it.”
Wicked: For Good, which lands in theaters this Thanksgiving, will continue Elphaba and Glinda’s story as Elphaba becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda solidifies her political position in Oz while navigating their relationship as they choose increasingly divergent paths.
