Marriage is a sacred bond, a partnership built on love, trust, and faith. In Islam, marriage is celebrated with heartfelt prayers and supplications (duas) to invite the blessings, guidance and protection of Allah into the lives of the couple. Whether you are attending a wedding, starting your married life or just want to share meaningful dua, here are three essential wishes that newlywed couples should know.
1. Dua of Congratulations and Blessings
When blessing a newly married couple, it is recommended to recite the following supplication (dua) from the hadith:
Arabic: اللَّهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي और देखें
Transliteration: Bārakallāhu laka, wa bāraka ‘alayka, wa jama’a Baynakumā fī khayr.
Literal translation: “May Allah bless you and send blessings upon you and unite you both in good.”
This dua comes from a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, in which Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) utters these words to bless the couple.
2. Wedding night dua
The wedding night marks the beginning of a new chapter for the couple. On this special night, it is recommended that the husband place his hands on his wife’s head and say the following prayer:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ
Transliteration: Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayrahā wa khayra mā jabaltahā ‘alayhi, wa a’udhu bika min sharrihā wa min sharri mā jabaltahā ‘alayhi.
Literal translation: “O Allah, I pray to You for her goodness and the good in which You created her; and I seek refuge with You from her evil and the evil in which You created her. Masu.”
This dua asks for the blessings, guidance and protection of Allah as you begin your married life.
3. Dua for righteous descendants
One of the hopes of marriage is to build a family filled with love and godliness. If you want to pray for righteous and healthy children, recite this beautiful prayer from Surah Al Imran (3:38).
Arabic: رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ ah
Transliteration: Rabbi Havli Min Radunka Durriyatan Tayivatan Innaka Samiudua.
Literal translation: “Lord, grant me good offspring; indeed, You are the One who hears my supplications.”
This dua reflects the heart’s desire to be a source of joy, faith and goodwill for future generations.
Marriage is more than just the union of two people; it is the foundation for building a faithful and loving family. These duas serve as a powerful reminder to invite the blessings of Allah into every step of your marriage. Whether you are a newlywed couple or someone celebrating the wedding of a loved one, these prayers are timeless gifts with immense spiritual meaning.
May Allah bless every marriage with love, mercy and lasting happiness. Armeen.
