Annual Forecast of the Strategic Security Environment for 2023
The annual estimates of the strategic security environment serve as a guide for scholars and professionals in the defense community on current challenges and opportunities in the strategic environment. This year’s publications outline key strategic issues across four broad themes: regional challenges and opportunities, domestic challenges, institutional challenges, and areas impacting U.S. strategic advantage. There is. These themes represent a wide range of topics that impact national security and provide a global assessment of the strategic environment to help the defense community focus their research and publications. Strategic competition with the People’s Republic of China and the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine remain major challenges to U.S. national security interests around the world. However, the evolving security environment also brings new and unconventional threats, such as the impact of rapid technological advances in areas such as cyber-attacks, terrorism, transnational crime, and artificial intelligence. At the same time, the United States faces domestic and institutional challenges such as insufficient recruitment and retention of all-volunteer forces, the prospect of logistical conflicts in large-scale combat operations, and the health of the U.S. defense industrial base. Additionally, the rapidly evolving security environment in the Arctic and space domains poses unique potential challenges to the Army’s strategic advantage.
