In an interview with The Athletic in November, Ellis said, “When I woke up (from the coma), I didn’t remember that I was a soccer player.
“I didn’t remember that I was in France or that I was Honduran. The doctors thought it would be difficult for me to get well again.
“The first two weeks were tough because I wasn’t 100% mentally. But I got better day by day.”
Ellis also revealed that he needed help to regain his reading and writing skills, which were “largely lost” after his injury.
During his rehabilitation period, he considered returning to competition, but due to Bordeaux’s financial problems, he was stripped of his amateur status and dropped to the fourth division, resulting in him losing his club.
Ellis played in Mexico, the United States and Portugal before moving to France.
