Lock in your annual leave — January is the hottest month for travel deals, which makes it the perfect time to book a holiday.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry — Metro‘s got you covered with everything you need to kickstart your 2025 adventures.
Justyna Chlopecka, from adventure tour company WeRoad, gave us the lowdown on the destinations yet to be overrun by tourists, as well as the coolest new travel trend: astrotourism.
‘This year, we’ve seen a notable increase in bookings to destinations that offer a mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation,’ she said.
‘Morocco, with its rich history and winter sun, continues to captivate travellers, while the Nordics are a top choice for those chasing the magic of the Northern Lights or active itineraries.’
Further afield, Justyna said long-haul locations such as Vietnam and Sri Lanka are drawing huge numbers of British tourists, while the US remains popular for national parks.
Still unsure where to book?
If you don’t have anywhere specific in mind but know you want it to be cheap, price comparison sites like Skyscanner and Google Flights can help.
For instance, Skyscanner’s ‘cheapest month’ search filter makes it easy to find the cheapest month of the year to visit every destination around the world. March is currently the cheapest month to fly to Sri Lanka, with prices starting from £646.
Flights from the UK to Morocco are just £27 in both February and March, Barcelona and Tenerife are the cheapest in January, with return flights from £28 to both destinations.
If you want to bag a bargain on Bangkok, make sure you book for a holiday in September or November, when return fares start from £659.
Meanwhile, March is currently the cheapest month to fly to New York, with prices starting from £236 for a return trip.
Elsewhere in the US, San Francisco and Chicago are the cheapest to fly to in May, with prices starting at £398 and £415 respectively. Flights from £292 are available to Orlando in March.
How to find the best holiday deals
Flight comparison sites like Skyscanner, Kayak, Kiwi, and Google Flights can all help you find the best deal, but there are plenty of other hacks for getting cheap flights and hotels worth trying too.
- Travel during the off-season: Flights and accommodation are generally cheaper outside of peak times, so avoid booking during the summer holidays if you can.
- Sign up for marketing emails: Subscribing to newsletters or price alerts from airlines and comparison sites will ensure you’re first to know when a good deal comes along.
- Be flexible with your dates: Just like certain times of year are cheaper, some days of the week are cheaper to fly on too. It’s also often cheaper to book last minute, if you can.
- Know when the sales are on: Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Travel Tuesday, and Sunshine Saturday are just some of the major sale events where holiday providers roll out huge discounts, making January the ideal time to snag incredible travel deals!
And if you’re booking cheap flights such as these, you’ll need somewhere to stay.
To save money, sign up for Expedia’s free travel rewards programme, One Key, to save 10% or more on over 100,000 hotels and up to 25% when you add a hotel after booking a flight.
Meanwhile, Booking.com is offering savings of 15% or more on stays around the world with Early 2025 Deals.
You can also find great January deals on luxury holiday packages from companies such as TUI, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic if you’re looking for a special treat.
Save up to £400 in the TUI sale, or grab a flight to New York from £359 via British Airways if you book by 28 January while Virgin Atlantic is offering flights to Barbados from £389.
