Bagheri made the remarks in Islamabad, where he arrived on Sunday leading a high-level military delegation at the invitation of Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir.
According to Press TV, Bagheri told reporters, “Relations between Iran and Pakistan’s military have developed in recent years and a good agreement has been reached.”
He pointed to security issues within the long border between Iran and Pakistan, adding that the two countries are working to transform their common border area into “a friendly border for both countries and a place of extensive economic ties.” .
“Iran and Pakistan are two major Islamic states in the sensitive West Asia and South Asia regions and have extensive ties with each other,” the Iranian commander-in-chief stressed.
He said Tehran and Islamabad have common positions on many issues that have arisen in the region over the past year.
Bagheri said talks with Pakistani officials would focus on regional development so that the two neighboring countries can take a harmonious position in the different international communities.
Officials from Iran and Pakistan will discuss improving defense cooperation, fighting terrorism, and the latest developments in the region and the Islamic world, especially in the border region.
Top political, military and security officials will also discuss the agreement previously signed between the two neighboring states.
Iranian military leaders will meet with Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif and Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif.
