Alphonso Davies plans to commit his future to Bayern Munich. Transfermarkt has confirmed an initial report from The Athletic that the Canadian men’s national team star is set to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga giants. Although there were reports earlier this week that talks had broken down, Bayern and Davies’ agent, ATG Management, remained in constant contact and were always willing to reach an agreement.
That compromise is now within reach. Davis will sign a four-year contract with a possible option for an additional year. Davis joined Bayern Munich from Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019. The initial transfer fee was 10 million euros, but it was later increased to 14 million euros after Davies fulfilled several clauses in his original transfer agreement. Most importantly, he won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020.
With Davies remaining at Bayern, the Whitecaps could still take a hit on other clauses. Overall, the contract value could grow to €20 million. Davis currently ranks as the eighth most expensive sale in Major League Soccer history. The left-back is the most expensive Canadian player on that list, and the second most expensive born-again player after Ricardo Pepi (Overview).
Alphonso Davies stays at Bayern Munich – what does it mean?
Signing Davies to a new contract has become a major business for Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberle. The left-back was due to become a free agent this summer, but there was strong interest from Real Madrid. They lost Davis, who had 12 goals and 34 assists in 218 games across all competitions. During his time at Bayern, Davies won the Bundesliga five times, the Champions League in 2020, the DFB Pokal twice and the Club World Cup in 2021.
A contract extension could create a domino effect. Bayern Munich are also in talks to renew the contracts of midfielder Joshua Kimmich and playmaker Jamal Musiala. Musiala and Davies were considered close friends and had hoped to have a future together at the same club. Once Davies’ work is complete, we can expect significant progress in the Musiala extension as well.
