One of the most insane freestyle ski and snowboard events is back for 2025, after a cancellation in 2024 due to poor snow conditions. Kings and Queens of Corbet’s is a yearly contest taking place at Jackson Hole’s legendary Corbet’s Couloir where the world bears witness to the young guns of the freeride as they defy gravity. The inaugural event took place in 2018 and instantly became a smash hit thanks to the simple fact that throwing tricks into Corbet’s Couloir is absolutely mind blowing. Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the competition is how each athlete flaunts their creativity, not only by what trick they throw into the couloir, but by their take-off and landing spot choices.
Corbet’s Couloir is one of the most incredible in-bounds features in the world and is the crown jewel of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Its epic walls and daunting entrance stare at prospective skiers as they ride past it open-mouthed in the resort’s beloved Aerial Tram known as Big Red. Off the top of the mountain, it’s a quick ski down to the top of the giant where snow at the bottom of the entrance cliff is much farther away than it seems in photos or video. This is where the competition begins.
Athletes must throw themselves between Couloir’s steep cliff walls, then navigate their way through a custom-built terrain park in the bowl below before they end their line at a moon booter right in front of the screaming crowd. This is where Colby Stevenson threw a massive double cork 1080 to cap off his run after throwing an off-axis switch 540 into Corbet’s to win the 2023 competition.
This year, the competition will be fierce as both the 2023 King, Colby Stevenson, and 2023 Queen, Claire McPherson, are back to defend their crowns against numerous heavy hitters. Among the returning King and Queen, Alex Hackel (3rd Place in 2023), Karl Fostvedt (2018 and 2022 King), Piper Kunst (2022 Queen) and Madison Blackley (2021 Queen) will be competing for a prize purse of $50,000 and most importantly, the coveted Crown.
