According to Sky Germany, Borussia Dortmund are in the process of signing Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford.
Dortmund held internal negotiations and decided to acquire the England international on loan.
The Bundesliga side distanced themselves from potential signings earlier this week, with Rashford reportedly not being a priority target for head coach Nuri Sahin.
The expected cost of acquiring the forward, even with subsidies, was reportedly higher than Dortmund’s funds.
That stance now appears to have changed, with AC Milan also showing a very specific interest and actively seeking to secure a deal for Rashford themselves.
Rashford’s camp held talks with a number of European clubs this month to explore contract terms.
Paul Merson says he is disappointed to see Marcus Rashford “lost his way” at Manchester United.
Manchester United are thought to have preferred Rashford to leave on loan if they were to allow him to leave Old Trafford.
Rashford was again left out of the match-day squad for Thursday night’s Premier League game against Southampton.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was asked after last weekend’s FA Cup third-round win against Arsenal whether Rashford had played his last game for the club.
Amorim replied, “I don’t know. Let’s see.”
Rashford preferred over Walker – why can’t AC Milan sign both?
Transfer Talk discusses AC Milan’s choice between Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, and how Brexit will affect the Italian club’s transfer options. Explain what to give.
According to Sky Italia, AC Milan are prioritizing Rashford over Manchester City’s Kyle Walker in the January transfer window.
Manager Josep Guardiola admitted at the weekend that Walker and his agent were “considering” his options after informing outgoing sporting director Txiki Begiristain of his intention to move abroad.
According to Sky Italia, AC Milan approached the defender some time ago in case Fikayo Tomori left the club, but the move was blocked by the appointment of new manager Sergio Conceição.
Good Morning Transfer considers Marcus Rashford and AC Milan suitability?
It remains to be seen whether this time will be different, but under current Serie A rules, Milan can only have one English player on their roster.
Serie A clubs can register up to three non-EU players per season, plus one additional player from the UK or Albania if the team currently has no non-EU players.
Ruben Amorim refused to comment on Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United in a press conference ahead of his visit to Southampton.
If you already have one or two non-EU players, you can bring in up to two more non-EU players.
If you have three or more non-EU players, you can bring in two additional non-EU players, one of whom must have played for the national team within the last 12 months.
Given the number of spots already filled, Milan could only sign two new players from outside the EU this season.
They did so in the summer by signing Emerson Royal from Tottenham and Strahinja Pavlovic from Red Bull Salzburg. This means that Milan only have one additional spot available for a British (or Albanian) player.
Even if they sell a player from outside the EU, they cannot sign another player based in the UK. There will be one slot per registration period (season).
