A Spanish tourist has been kidnapped by ISIS while on vacation in Algeria, according to local media.
The reports, which The Express has not independently confirmed, suggested the fighters captured the female tourist in the south of the country before taking her across the border into neighbouring Mali.
It’s said that the kidnappers belong to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara and that they released her to the escorts, only taking the woman.
Mali has been plagued by Islamist armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara in recent years and attacks against civilians have become commonplace.
The news of the reported kidnapping comes just days after an Austrian citizen was kidnapped by gunmen in northern Niger, the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.
Gunmen stormed the Agadez home of Eva Gretzmacher and took her away in a vehicle. No one has yet claimed responsibility for that attack.
The 73-year-old is well-known in the local community for her social projects focusing on education and women’s empowerment. She has faced kidnapping threats before.
