With the Premier League action rolling onto Thursday night, we have a pair of top-flight showdowns on the cards.
Watching Manchester United turn their attention back to Premier League duties as they welcome Southampton to Old Trafford, Brighton will also make the trip to Ipswich.
With a pair of Premier League battles pencilled in on Thursday night, we have taken a look at two of the most appealing midweek betting tips.
19:30 Ipswich vs Brighton
While Ipswich might still find themselves scrapping it out in the relegation zone, Kieran McKenna’s men have shown some signs of a boost on either side of opening the New Year. Signing off 2024 with a sensational performance at Portman Road as they claimed a 2-0 victory against Chelsea, Thursday’s guests have certainly breathed life back into their charge for Premier League safety. Extending on their FA Cup adventure last weekend as they secured a routine 3-0 romp against League One outfit Bristol Rovers, the one-time Manchester United coach has not seen his squad suffer a defeat from any of their previous three appearances across all competitions. Likewise, despite suffering late heartbreak away at Fulham earlier in the month as they eventually had to settle for a 2-2 stalemate, McKenna’s side have registered four points from their back-to-back Premier League showdowns. Appearing to have found a clinical edge in the final third, Ipswich will be desperate to extend on their recent charge at Portman Road.
Claiming a much-welcomed FA Cup boost last weekend as they secured a 4-0 romp away at Championship outfit Norwich, Brighton will be desperate to use that performance as a platform to build on. However, although the Seagulls might have come flying out of the traps following Fabian Hurtzler’s arrival last summer, Thursday’s guests have struggled to find any real stability over recent times. Despite getting the New Year underway with a 1-1 stalemate at home against Arsenal, Brighton are without a win from any of their previous eight consecutive Premier League appearances. Watching their European dreams take a major denton either side of November’s international break, the Seagulls have also shown some extended issues away from the Amex. In fact, the former St. Pauli boss has seen his squad muster just a single Premier League victory on their travels since way back on October 19th. Likewise, continuing on from last season, Hurtzler’s side have not recorded consecutive away victories across any competition over the past 12 months.

20:00 Manchester United vs Southampton
Springing what was a real FA Cup upset away at historic rivals Arsenal last weekend, Manchester United certainly gained a string of plaudits in north London. However, although the Red Devils might have shown some real improvements since opening the New Year, new boss Ruben Amorim is more than aware that he has a major job on his hands at Old Trafford. Despite getting 2025 underway with a dramatic 2-2 stalemate away at Anfield, the former Sporting Lisbon manager has seen his squad muster just a single point from any of their previous four Premier League appearances. Still scrapping it out in the bottom-half of the table, United have also continued to show some glaring issues on home soil. Last seen at Old Trafford falling to a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle on December 30th, Amorim’s squad have lost all of their previous three showdowns in the red half of Manchester by an aggregate score of 8-2.
Although Southampton might have only appointed new boss Ivan Juric last month, the Saints are seeking what would be a famous miracle at St. Mary’s. While Thursday’s guests might have only made their Premier League return this season, they have continued to break a string of unwanted records. Sat rock-bottom of the table and coming under some serious scrutiny, the former Torino boss has also seen his squad put just six points on the board. With many around St. Mary’s appearing to have accepted their fate, Juric’s men also open the midweek fixtures sat 10 points adrift of Premier League safety. Getting the New Year underway with another nightmare performance as they fell to a 5-0 drumming at home against Brentford, Southampton have lost their previous three top-flight showdowns by an aggregate score of 8-1. Claiming just a single Premier League win so far this season, they also fell to a 3-0 drumming when they met Man United for their reverse showdown on September 14th.
