Manager Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to look to strengthen their defense in the January transfer window after the Reds’ 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest. Arne Slott’s side remain top of the Premier League after the spoils were distributed at the City Ground on Tuesday.
The home side took an early lead with a promising first attack as Anthony Elanga broke free and slotted the ball perfectly into the path of in-form forward Chris Wood. The New Zealand international fired the ball low past Alisson and into the bottom corner of the goal.
Despite knocking on the door many times, they were unable to create many clear-cut chances, until Diogo Jota headed home the visitors level just 22 seconds after slotting on. The visitors then pressed up front and had several clear chances saved by Mats Selz.
Liverpool fans worried about signing £150,000-a-year star after draw with Nottingham Forest
Arne Slott now has a difficult decision to make as all 20 teams approach the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Jamie Carragher wants Liverpool to ‘sign a defender’
He discovered something that happens “all the time” at Reds games.
Carragher felt the Reds were still dangerous going forward, posting on social media: “Liverpool should have won tonight but they continue to create big chances even in games they can’t win.”
But the defender turned pundit is now desperate for the club to enter the transfer market and sign a defensive player before the end of the month. He went on to say that he feels teams in the slot are becoming more and more open at the back.
“The solid defense we had at the beginning of the season is gone. It feels like we’re always going to concede a goal. Buy a defender!”
He has previously claimed Andy Robertson needs support in the left-back position and the Scotland captain once again struggled against Forest. Kostas Tsimikas was introduced alongside Jota and made an immediate impact, his shot being converted by the striker’s nod.
The club appear to have few options at the heart of defense, especially considering the injury problems Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate have faced in recent weeks. Slott also doesn’t seem too convinced about young centre-back Jarrell Quansah.

The one-time Premier League winner has named the former Barcelona star as his favorite footballer of all time.
Meanwhile, the Merseysiders could soon face a major dilemma in finding a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold if the right-back chooses to leave for free at the end of his contract. Connor Bradley may be seen as the man to fill that void, but a backup will still be needed. Fans will agree with Carragher that they need a defender this month.
